For some reason, society seems to put debilitating limits on young adults with autism. The definition of autism is: a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. This summer a group of 10 young adults with autism checked society’s norms at the door and confronted this misconception head on by working with one another for one week during an art camp where they embarked on transformations in art, attitudes and emotions to create one-of-a-kind pieces of art. Their plan: to show us all how to "think differently."
Autism Oklahoma and Youth & Family Services (YFS) teamed up to give this group of young adults a new experience, one that has never been done before.
From June 18 through June 22 this group of emerging artists had an experience they will never forget. The artists worked with 3 different professional artists from the Oklahoma City area who assisted by guiding and supervising the making of the art. The camp was lead by Brandon Smith, Project Coordinator.
The artwork created in this camp will be featured in “The Big Swanky Art Show” in the Paseo in Oklahoma City at Rainbow Fleet on Friday, July 6. The artists will be at the art show to speak to visitors to tell them about their creations. The works will be for sale as well as prints of each and every piece of art.
The biggest goal of this art camp is to change everyone who comes in contact with the artists or the art. It's a program about thinking outside of the box and "Thinking Differently"!
